ACCME/AMA PRA Accreditation Statement

                                 

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the Joint sponsorship of The University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center and Rios Associates.  The University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for Physicians.

 

The University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 100 (20 per module) AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

 

Activity Proposal for Enduring Materials:

Activity:  Medical Spanish and Cultural Competency Internet Program (Beginner through Advanced Levels).  Consists of 2 text-Workbooks and 14 Audio CDs based on CME approved, McGraw-Hills Complete Medical Spanish text and a Corresponding Audio CD Program as well as Espanol para Personal Medico - Advanced textbook, CDs and Intensive Workshops coupled with live presentation of materials by means of Microsoft Live Meeting.  Textbooks are authored by Joanna Rios, PhD and Jose Fernandez in addition to the CDs also produced by them. All materials are copyrighted.

Activity Description:  A series of live presentations using Microsoft Live Meeting and a teleconference audio connection through the use of Audio and Visual CD ROMs, and textbooks.  It is based on CME accredited textbooks, audio CDs and Intensive Workshops sponsored by the University of Arizona, College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

 

Target Audience:  Physicians of all areas and other health care professionals:  PAs, NPs, RNs, DDSs, Pharmacists, etc.

 

Educational Objectives: 

At the close of this activity, participants will:

Be able to interview patients in Spanish, take a detailed medical history, conduct a physical exam, give prescriptions and follow-up instructions & intervene with medical emergencies.

Be exposed to a Spanish vocabulary of 3,000 general and medical words.

Develop a good flow of speech in present, past, past-perfect, future, preterit past, conditional, progressive, imperfect and all of the compound tenses, as well as the Indicative, Imperative and Subjunctive Mood with all of its tenses.

Develop an awareness of differences in attitudes between Latinos & other Americans concerning time, space, clothing, foods, health and medical care.

Develop an understanding of cultural sensitivity and cultural competency.

Develop skills to continue language acquisition though daily practice & personal experience.

 

Intermediate/Advanced students will be able to do all of the above using more idioms, complex tenses and moods (conditional, present & past progressive, present & past perfect and imperfect tenses plus Indicative, Imperative and subjunctive moods and its tenses.)

 

Methodology:  Live Audio and Visual presentations and teleconferencing through the use of Microsoft’s Live Meeting, in conjunction with Textbooks and CDs.  The above mentioned will be based on demonstrations, explanations of concepts, dramatizations of dialogues, drills and exercises, as well as interactive practice.
